Major Announcement: Watchers of Lysander - Digital Card Game

by August Karbowski

For more than a decade I've been building the world of Lysander through stories, game prototypes, and countless design documents. Today I'm excited to officially reveal the project that brings it all together:

Watchers of Lysander

A free to play collectible card game (CCG), with a unique style of combat and strategy. I took inspiration from elements I enjoyed from MtG, Hearthstone, Yugioh, and Pokemon, but put my own twist and flavor into areas I didn't enjoy. The game is targeted to launch on Steam, and ideally a concurrent Android launch. It will feature a single player mode where players can advance through parts of my expansive 10 year lore, and a Multiplayer Mode with Ranking seasons and Unranked play. Single Player mode will allow for players to collect cards without purchasing booster packs. It is very important to me that everyone can enjoy the game, this also can create a healthy player base by creating a less daunting price to entry.

Grid based Board & Combat

Imagine commanding armies across a tactical battlefield where positioning matters as much as deck construction. Watchers of Lysander combines collectible card gameplay with chess-inspired combat to create battles unlike any traditional CCG.

In Watchers of Lysander each player controls a 3×5 battlefield where units attack using chess-inspired movement patterns. This grid is where Minions and certain types of Equipment are deployed. Cards may feature an icon indicating a special attack pattern. These icons indicate that the Minion can attack enemies in a corresponding pattern.

ChariotRook
Elephant HeadBishop
Horse HeadKnight
ChevronKing(Commander)

Some attack patterns represent ranged combat. Bow units can only attack enemies one row away, while Trebuchet units attack enemies two rows away. These restrictions allow units with stronger statistics to remain balanced.

Power Creep Kept in Check

What I did not enjoy most about Hearthstone, was the constant need to purchase current packs, because of this Watchers of Lysander will not have a set rotation. It will instead feature a conservative ban list. I don't want players to go through all the trouble to collect cards only to have them become unusable a year or season later. Similarly my artists are working very hard on these cards, I want them to be able to find their way into decks even years after their release. My goal is to respect the time and money players invest into building their collections.

That being said power creep will be kept in check in a similar manner to Yugioh. Powerful effects with have specific targetting conditions, or synergies with an archetype rather than a large swath of cards. Consider the following card effects

  • Increase the attack of all minions by 1"

  • When Minions you control gain attack power, heal that many Lifepoints.
This effect can better be kept in check if instead stated "Human Knights/Soldiers you control".

Unique Card Types

In addition to Minions there will also be Spell cards, however I take it a step further with Location and Equipment cards. Locations are broken down into subtypes Land,Site, Structure, and Settlements.

Typically a player can place 1 location per turn, these will not be placed onto the grid but rather stacked into distinct piles of that Land type. Lands are the primary way the player gain resources.

Land Energy
Domain White / Order
Wastes Black / Decay
Pool Blue / Surge
Frontier Red / Force
Wilderness Green / Primal
Burrow Orange / Might
Eyrie Purple / Grace

The color relates to an Energy type, Energy is a resource mainly used to deploy minions, cast spells, or activate Equipment. Some subtypes of Location cards can only be placed onto specific Locations. For example:

  • BurialLocation Site
  • Place only on a Wastes Land you control.
  • Whenever a unit in play is sent to the grave, gain 1 Bone Counter(BC).
  • Action: Spend BCx6 Gain 1 Decay.

Taken a step further-

  • MausoleumLocation Structure 4 Decay and 2 Might
  • Construct only on a Burial Site.
  • You may pay the Might cost by instead banishing a unit from your grave.
  • Action: Target a unit in your graveyard. Pay Bone Counters equal to its total cost and summon it.
  • It becomes Zombie, and gains Indestructible, Hexproof.

Watchers of Lysander is still in active development, but I'll be sharing artwork, mechanics, lore, and development updates in the coming months as I prepare for a Steam release.

Thank you to everyone who has followed my projects over the years. I hope you'll join me as we build something truly unique together.
